COLOMBIA - VIII International Congress on Localized Agri-Food Systems (SIAL)
The REDSIAL (Latin American Network on Localized Agro-food Systems), the University of Caldas, the National University of Colombia, the University of Pamplona and the Colombian Corporation for Agricultural Research (CORPOICA) welcome you to the 8th Conference on Localized Agro-food Systems (SIAL), to be held in Manizales (Colombia) from 13 to 15 November 2018

The Conference will focus on how the localized agro-food systems approach, together with other strategies, can promote innovation and contribute to reducing inequalities and poverty for the development of rural territories, deepening the analysis of social, institutional and productive harmonization in territories facing different types of conflicts.

1. Multifunctionality of localized agro-food systems and their roles in the dynamisation of territories and the reduction of inequalities and rural poverty.
2. Innovation systems and social management of knowledge for the enhancement of territorial resources.
3. Networks, alliances and territorial governance
4. Strategies for valorization and differentiation through quality labels for origin products and local food products and services and their articulation to value chains.
5. The role of civil society, public policy and new institutional arrangements for the resolution of multidimensional conflicts affecting territories.

In addition to attending the event, we encourage active participation through the presentation of papers, posters, photographs, videos, or samples of products, services and experiences from localized agro-food systems.

In a world of intense technological and market changes, rural territories are facing great challenges in order to simultaneously guarantee the food security of the planet, achieve the sustainable use of natural resources and the environments in which they operate, maintain market competitiveness and improve the living conditions of rural inhabitants. In this context, localized agro-food systems emerge as a form of organization based on the concentration of agro-food production and processing units, which, through coordinated actions between territorial actors, enhance their specific resources and contribute to the competitive and sustainable development of rural territories. As an approach, local agro-food systems (SIAL) aim to understand the nature of the bond between local agro-food production and its territory and, through collective action, to contribute to the valorization of territorial identity and of bundles of goods and services (agricultural, agro-food, touristic, environmental and other) with given quality attributes linked to the territory.
This Conference, given the persistence of imbalances in rural territories, aims at establishing how the localized agro-food systems approach and other territorial development strategies can contribute to reducing critical problems such as poverty and inequality in rural areas.  Special attention will be given to the harmonization of rural territories affected by different conflicts and that, through institutionalism and collective action, seek to reactivate agro-food production and territorial services.

The international network of researchers in the field of Localized Agro-Food Systems holds a Conference every two or three years at world level, in order to exchange experiences in conceptual, methodological and operational development. Seven congresses have been held so far : Montpellier (France) in 2002; Toluca (Mexico) in 2004; Baeza (Spain) in 2006;  Mar del Plata (Argentina) in 2008; Parma (Italy) in 2010; Florianópolis (Brasil) in 2013; and  Stockholm (Sweden) in 2016.
The 8th SIAL Conference will be held in November 2018 in Colombia in Manizales, the capital of the Department of Caldas, localized in the heart of the Colombian Coffee Growing Area (“zona cafetera”). The region stands out for its wealth of landscapes, agricultural production systems, rural agro-industries, rural tourism and cultures, as well as products and services that together constitute a varied heritage of territorial identity, which is well worth knowing and enjoying.
